A jack of all trades and a professional multi-tasker, a dental assistant is a very important member of the dental team. Although the main role of a dental assistant is assisting the dentist, the job description is endless. Below are some of the daily tasks involved with dental assisting, which can vary by state and dental practice.

- Applying fluoride treatments
- Assisting dentists in a variety of procedures from fillings to IV sedation
- Comforting patients during procedures
- Conducting lab tasks such as making casts of teeth
- Educating patients about proper oral health care
- Encouraging patient referrals/reviews
- Handling dental instruments during procedures
- Keeping record of treatments
- Maintaining infection control protocols
- Obtaining medical history from patients
- Ordering supplies and tracking inventory
- Preparing work area with tools and equipment
- Setting up and cleaning up operatories
- Sterilizing and packaging dental instruments
- Taking dental x-rays, impressions, and molds
- Understanding and utilizing dental software
- Upselling products and treatments
Dental assistants are required to possess a wealth of knowledge about the mouth including the teeth, oral tissues, and facial structures. Most states require that dental assistants graduate from an accredited program and pass a state exam. Some states even require certification and licensing. A significant part of the profession consists of on-the-job training.
A dental assistant is considered to be the heart of the office. A big part of the job involves connecting with patients whether through small talk or preparing them for a dental procedure. People skills are a must in this profession. You need to be able to communicate effectively with everyone in the office.
