Whether it’s losing weight, eating healthier, or procrastinating less, we all have something we would like to improve upon or achieve because let’s be real, it’s all about living our best life in 2019.
Achieving Optimal Oral Health
Many goals and resolutions involve bettering overall health, but you shouldn’t overlook the health of your smile. Don’t forget – oral health impacts overall health! So, if you skipped flossing too many times to count in 2018, or missed a dentist appointment, it’s time to get back on track with your oral health habits.
Here are some tips and tricks for getting your best smile ever.
Avoid tobacco: Smoking, chewing, vaping – just say no. Tobacco ruins your teeth by severely discoloring them. It can also lead to or exacerbate dental problems, with oral cancer being the worst.
Brush 2x2: The golden rule of brushing is twice a day for two minutes each time. Make sure to use a soft bristle toothbrush and brush in a circular motion, hitting all surfaces of the teeth.
Choose fluoride: Despite what some might say, fluoride is an important line of defense against tooth decay. Drinking fluorinated water and using fluoride toothpaste will give your teeth extra protection. In-office fluoride treatments are also an option.
Drink water: Water is the best drink of choice. In addition to its hydrating benefits, it cleanses the mouth of food particles and prevents dry mouth, which in turn, limits tooth decay.
Eat healthy foods: Tooth-friendly foods such as apples, carrots, celery, cheese, leafy greens, and nuts all provide your mouth with essential vitamins and minerals for maintaining strong teeth. The crunch packs the punch! Crunchy foods like apples can act as a natural cleanser.
Fix dental work: Dental work doesn’t always last forever. If you neglect fixing or replacing worn-down dental restorations, it could potentially lead to more problems, which means more money out of your pocket.
Floss daily: A sore subject for many, especially for those who neglect to do it, flossing cleans the areas around the teeth that brushing cannot. If you need a reminder, set an alarm on your phone or keep the floss next to your toothbrush.
Limit sugar intake: This is tough if you have a sweet tooth, but try to limit the amount of sugar you consume since sugar has a direct link to tooth decay. Be smart with your beverage selections and opt for water or drinks with reduced sugar.
Relieve stress: Some symptoms of stress can include grinding or clenching your teeth (particularly while asleep), which can cause them to crack or chip. In addition, you may experience jaw pain and headaches. If stress is wrecking your mouth, you might benefit from wearing a night guard.
Smile more: Surely, there’s always something to smile about. Smiling not only makes you feel happy, it also makes you look younger and can relieves stress by releasing endorphins.
Visit the dentist: The ADA states that about one third of Americans don’t see the dentist regularly. Gasp! Signs that your overdue for a dental check-up include bad breath, pain, swollen or bleeding gums, staining, and tartar buildup. Tip: Book your next appointment while you’re already at the dentist.
Whiten your teeth: Bright, white teeth look good on everyone. There are various ways to achieve a whiter smile, but your best option is usually an in-office bleaching treatment.
